Biography

 

Mark Patnode received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Purchase College and is a Fellow of the Urban Artists Initiative (UAI) Hartford, CT, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism (CCT), in partnership with the Institute for Community Research (ICR). Mark is a recipient of numerous fellowships, residencies, and grants, including two all-inclusive CCT awards to Vermont Studio Center where he worked with William Beckman, Michael Gitlin, David Kapp, Carol Robb. Mark has also received two all-inclusive Residencies to I-Park Artists’ Enclave. A Silver Rose recipient from Bulgaria’s Preeminent Poet, Lyubomir Levchev, Mark was sponsored by the Griffis & Orpheus Foundations for a summer 2006 Artist Residency at the Sharon House in the village of Polkovnik Serafimovo, Smolyan, Bulgaria.

Mark’s work has been featured internationally in galleries and museums, including The White House, National Mall, National Palace of Culture, Bulgaria, Neuberger Museum, Wadsworth Atheneum Gallery at Connecticut Convention Center, Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism Office, Lyman Allyn Art Museum, Three Faber Birren National Color Award Shows, Real Art Ways, Ezra and Cecile Zilkha Gallery at Wesleyan College, ALVA Gallery, Fuller Gallery, Left Bank Gallery Essex. Mark's work is in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Bush, Sr. Presidente Pedro Verona Pires, Cape Verde, Africa, The Smithsonian Institution, and private collections internationally. He has been interviewed by American, African, Bulgarian, Cape Verde, and Portuguese press and appears in the 2008 Orpheus Art Album Ford / Brod, St. Klinent Ohridski University Press, Lyubomir Levchev, Editor. In 2003, Mark received publicity in the January edition of American Artist magazine for his large-scale paintings project of urban New London, done through a UAI grant. Mark’s work is currently featured in Jack Richeson & Co. catalog.

Mark's painting of the Charter Oak was chosen by Governor M. Jodi Rell to be used for the logo of Connecticut's Tercentennial. The painting resides in the Governor's Residence Conservancy. Mark was sponsored by CTT Arts in Education to represent CCT Higher Order Thinking (HOT) Schools in 2010 at the Ellipse in the National Mall for the Connecticut Tree at the National Christmas Tree lighting.
Mark was selected by Senator Joseph Lieberman as Connecticut’s
Designated Artist for the 2008 White House Christmas Tree Ornament Design. Mark attended an Artist’s Reception at the White House on December 2, 2008 (his ornament is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution). Mark's work is currently displayed in Senator Lieberman’s Washington, D.C. Hart Building office as part of CCT Art in Public Spaces Program.

Juried into the CCT Teaching Artist Directory, a reflection of excellence in both teaching and artistry, Mark conducts residencies through CCT Arts in Education HOT Schools and public and private organizations seeking to fulfill Federal, State, and local curriculum mandates. Mark was a nominee for the Guilford Art Center’s Achievement Award – 2006 - Year of the Child Education category.
Mark is a Presenter for CCT HOT Schools Summer Institute, Best Practices in Teaching Artist residencies, Art & Technology, The Marriage of Art & Science, and invited panelist. Mark served in 2007 & 2008 as the USA Professional Visual Artist Instructor for Center for Creative Youth Cape Verde Visual Arts Program in Africa.

Mark is a member of the Bulgarian-American Exchange Program, CREC CCY CulturArte, CT Plein Air Painters Society, Elected Member of Mystic Arts Center and Norwich Arts Center, Hygienic Galleries Programming Committee, Executive Board of Directors, Purchase College Alumni Association, Inc., New London Rotary International - New London Board, and is listed in Who’s Who in American Art. Mark shares studio space with five other Artists at 73 Washington Street, New London and resides at the Griffis Art Center, New London, CT.
